SINGER & PERFORMER

As a singer, my work is shaped by a rich tapestry of musical influences and for much of my career, I felt caught between musical worlds. I loved classical song, was drawn to the storytelling of folk music, inherited a passion for jazz from my Grandfather, and developed an enduring fascination with the great film musicals of the twentieth century through my Grandmother. Rather than following a conventional path, my musical life evolved at the intersection of these influences.

Today, I embrace that diversity as an essential part of who I am as an artist. Whether performing recital repertoire, jazz standards, folk-inspired works, musical theatre, or research-informed performance projects, I am drawn to music that tells stories, evokes memory, and creates meaningful connections with audiences

ARTISTIC INFLUENCES

My Welsh heritage from my Dad fostered a lifelong love of folk song and storytelling, while my Grandfather's passion for jazz introduced me to the rich world of the Great American Songbook. These influences inspired my album Remember, a celebration of timeless songs and the memories, people, and experiences they carry with them.

Alongside these traditions, growing up in Paris nurtured a deep appreciation for classical music, while countless hours spent watching the great Hollywood musicals with my Grandmother sparked a fascination with performers, voices, and stories that would later inspire my creative work.

Because of these varied influences, I have never felt entirely "in vogue" within a single musical genre. Instead, I have found my artistic home in the spaces between them. My work embraces the idea that great singing transcends categories and that meaningful performance is ultimately about communication, authenticity, and human connection.

BESPOKE CONCERTS & COLLABORATIONS

Alongside my recital and research-informed performance work, I create bespoke concert programmes for festivals, arts organisations, educational institutions, community groups, heritage venues, and private events.

Whether developing a themed recital, lecture-recital, educational performance, after-dinner programme, workshop, or special event, I enjoy creating performances tailored to specific audiences and occasions. Drawing on a wide-ranging repertoire and my experience as both performer and educator, I design programmes that combine artistic excellence with accessibility, engagement, and storytelling.

Past projects have explored themes including film music, hidden musical histories, women's voices, memory, identity, belonging, classical song, jazz standards, and interdisciplinary performance.

I am always interested in new collaborations and opportunities to create performances that connect people through music.

PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY

At the heart of my work is a belief that singing is one of the most powerful forms of human communication.

Whether performing in a concert hall, community setting, educational environment, or interdisciplinary project, my aim is to create experiences that foster connection, curiosity, and reflection. I am particularly interested in uncovering stories that might otherwise remain unheard and in exploring the ways music helps us understand ourselves and one another.

My work as a performer is enriched by my research and teaching. Through every project, I strive to share music in ways that are engaging, meaningful, and deeply human.

FEATURED PERFORMANCES

The Soprano Behind the Screen

The Soprano Behind the Screen is a lecture-recital exploring the life and legacy of Marni Nixon, the extraordinary soprano whose voice became one of the most recognisable in Hollywood while her name remained largely unknown.

Often referred to as Hollywood's "ghost singer," Nixon provided the singing voices for leading actresses in some of the most celebrated film musicals of the twentieth century, including The King and I, West Side Story, and My Fair Lady. Despite her immense contribution to these iconic productions, her work remained largely uncredited for many years.

Through live performance, historical context, and musical exploration, The Soprano Behind the Screen celebrates Nixon's remarkable artistry while examining broader questions of visibility, recognition, and authorship in the performing arts. The programme shines a light on a singer whose voice shaped cinematic history and invites audiences to consider the often-unseen contributions of performers working behind the scenes.

The project was featured on BBC Radio 2's EP on Sunday, helping to bring Marni Nixon's remarkable story to a wider audience and highlighting the enduring significance of her contribution to musical and cinematic history.

Finding Home

Finding Home began as an exploration of musical identity.

For much of my career, I searched for where I belonged artistically. Raised on classical music, inspired by folk traditions, captivated by jazz standards, and deeply drawn to musical theatre, I often felt that I existed between genres rather than within one. The recital was originally conceived as a search for a musical home: an exploration of what it means to embrace a diverse artistic identity and to find freedom beyond the boundaries of category and convention.

As the project developed, however, its focus began to shift. Questions of belonging, identity, and home extended beyond music itself, becoming intertwined with wider reflections on change, resilience, and self-understanding. What began as a search for a musical home gradually became an exploration of how we construct a sense of home within ourselves.

Rather than arriving at a single answer, the process revealed something more fluid: that identity is not fixed or singular, but continually shaped and reshaped by experience. In this sense, home is not a destination, but an ongoing act of making meaning.

Through songs exploring longing, transformation, memory, hope, and renewal, Finding Home traces this shifting landscape of identity. Classical song sits alongside musical theatre, art song and contemporary storytelling, not to resolve into a single genre, but to capture the texture and shifting colors of a real life.

At its heart, the recital asks what it means to live without the need for resolution. It suggests that we do not have to fit neatly into predefined boxes, and that our strength may lie not in becoming one thing, but in allowing multiple influences, histories, and voices to coexist.

Home is not a place you arrive at, it is the story you keep rewriting about yourself.

Finding Home is therefore both a musical and personal journey: not a search for a single identity, but an exploration of how identity is formed, revised, and lived in motion

Recorded at Cowshed Studios in London and released in 2021, Charlie-Jade’s debut album Remember features music by some of the most renowned composers of the Great American Songbook including Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Harold Arlen and Cole Porter. Remember is thought of as a love letter to the Great American Songbook, with each song chosen to represent a person, or a moment in time. The songs have stood the test of time and these new arrangements by Luciano Williamson allow a new soundscape whilst maintaining the beauty of the original song. The band arrangements were written for piano, violin, cello and percussion. Led by pianist and musical director Connor Fogel, the band featured Grace Buttler (violin), Joe Keenan (cello) and Oliver Pooley (percussion). The album inspired the creation of a live concert: Remember - Charlie-Jade Swings The Standards. More detail can be found below.
